1 c water
2 c seedless raisins
1 c shortening
2 c sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
4 c flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp allspice
Add water to seedless raisins and boil for 5 minutes. Then cool. Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs. Add (raisins & any liquid) and vanilla. Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. Add to raisin mixture and blend. Drop by spoonfuls on greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes. Makes about 60 cookies. Chopped nuts may be added to the mixture.

Happy to find this recipe. I used to make these by the ice cream pailful and store in the freezer. Usually I would find empty pails when I needed some for lunches (3 teenaged boys). My recipe called for brown sugar, only 1/2 tsp salt, 1 cup chopped nuts added just before flour, baked at 400 degrees; otherwise, the same recipe. Not gourmet or fancy but a good, easy-to-make, tasty cookie. Makes lots, too.
